Superjoint was formed by Phil Anselmo, Jimmy Bower, and Joe Fazzio in the early 1990’s (and originally named “Superjoint Ritual”). The New Orleans Sludge/Thrash group was later to be joined by Hank Williams III and Kevin Bond. Their sound can be heard as a crossover between hardcore punk and Pantera. Black metal influences can also be heard in trace amounts on their albums. The band name, Superjoint Ritual, comes from lyrics found in the Darkthrone song, “The Pagan Winter”. Bands like Venom, Celtic Frost, Slayer, and Voivod have been noted as major influences.
Superjoint eventually received exposure on programs on television networks such as MTV2’s, Headbanger’s Ball, and Fuse TV’s, Uranium. During the bands active years, Bower stated that Phil Anselmo wrote between 70-85% of the lyrics.
DevilDriver are an American heavy metal band from Santa Barbara, California, formed in 2002, consisting of Coal Chamber vocalist Dez Fafara (the only remaining original member), guitarists Mike Spreitzer and Neal Tiemann, drummer Austin D’Amond, and bassist Diego “Ashes” Ibarra. The band was originally named Deathride, however, due to copyright issues and the name being taken by several bands, they changed their name to DevilDriver, which refers to bells Italian Wiccans used to drive evil forces away.
On October 28, 2014, Dez Fafara announced that drummer John Boecklin and guitarist Jeff Kendrick left the band. He also announced that the band will be on hiatus until 2016, when the new album will be released, to focus on his reunion with Coal Chamber. But then on January 7, 2015, it was announced that past member Chimaira drummer, Austin D’Amond, had joined the band as the new drummer. And on March 19, 2015, Neal Tiemann was announced as the replacement for Jeff Kendrick on Guitars. Tiemann started his career with Midwest Kings and has spent time playing with Caroline’s Spine, Burn Halo and Uncle Kracker among others.
On March 18, 2016, DevilDriver released their first single from upcoming album, Trust No One, titled ‘Daybreak’.
DevilDriver’s music has been widely described an amalgamation of groove metal and melodic death metal. All of the members have stated they are influenced by several types of music (some not even found within the heavy metal genre), Miller’s influences include Metallica, Opeth, Slayer and In Flames, and states that many of the bands he tours with influences his songwriting. Fafara’s influences include Johnny Cash, and Motörhead, stating he likes people with “low voices”. Members of DevilDriver can be seen on Machine Head’s Elegies DVD citing Machine Head as an influence. Boecklin’s main inspiration into becoming a percussionist came from his enjoyment of Metallica, Primus and Ministry.
King Parrot’s new offering ‘Dead Set’ lays waste to the senses with high-octane grind, thrashing riffs, pummeling beats and punk rock mayhem. Produced by the legendary Philip H. Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual) at Nodferatu’s Lair studio in Louisiana, ‘Dead Set’ is a relentless aural assault proving that somehow the band show no signs of wear and tear following a brutal touring schedule through Asia, North America, Europe and Australia since their inception in 2011.
Leading off with the hilarious ‘Like a Rat’ video filmed at Anselmo’s ranch during the recording process, and the creeping ‘Home Is Where The Gutter Is’ video filmed by long time video producer for the band Dan Farmer, Dead Set is a more mature but equally as brutal record to its predecessor. Growth and solidarity is something the band have focused on in the last 12 months, and the results from ‘Dead Set’ are a testament to the bands commitment.
A huge Australian tour to launch the new record with sold out shows in capital cities around the country has cemented King Parrot’s name as one of the top handful of Australian extreme metal bands. Their hell-raising live show, full of energy, ferocity and hilarity, confronts and entertains audiences alike. Drawing influence primarily from the thrash, grind, hardcore and punk scenes of the 80’s and 90’s, a new sound has been created fusing those styles and attitudes with a fresh approach that encapsulates their aggression, humor and intensity seamlessly.
