Spare Change

Spare Change started in 2002 as a 4 piece band. We played our first gig at Ham’s in Kinston for New Year’s ’02-’03. We attribute much of our success to the crowd from La Grange and Kinston. They would follow us everywhere and we developed a reputation for having a good party crowd.

Over the years, the band grew in popularity and in numbers. We are now a six-piece band with a three-man crew and we tour throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia with occasional visits to Maryland, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.

We have a rather unique instrumentation (two guitars, bass, drums, fiddle), five lead singers (including a female vocalist) and a rapper. This lineup allows us a stylistic versatility unmatched in our area. Top-notch production and an extremely talented crew allow us to put on a high energy show that has earned rave reviews all over the east coast.

In 2015, we debuted some new original material that we are very excited about. We’re hoping to get some of that “on tape” very soon for your listening enjoyment.

I know there are also some of you out there that would like to know where the name “Spare Change” came from. Well, here is the story….

Our original bass player was Chris Morlock. He was not a bass player at the time, he was a guitar player. We practiced quite a bit trying to learn enough material to play out. Well Chris wasn’t used to playing with his fingers so they would get sore. He had pretty much just been playing bass so he didn’t carry picks with him anymore so we would all dig in our pockets for any “spare change” we may have had. He would then proceed to play the bass with quarters, nickels, dimes or pennies. And that, ladies and gentlemen is where the name “Spare Change” came from. (Source)
