Like A Storm

Like A Storm band membersCanada-based New Zealand hard rockers Like a Storm found success among U.S. audiences in 2009 thanks to their powerful mix of post-grunge, alt-metal, and classic hard rock with the distinctive addition of the didgeridoo. While their initial success came as an independent act, they later signed with prominent international metal label Century Media, and landed a chart hit with 2014’s “Love the Way You Hate Me.”

Like a Storm formed in Auckland in 2005 around talented siblings Chris (lead vocals, guitar, keys, didgeridoo), Matt(lead guitar, vocals, keys, programming), and Kent Brooks(bass, vocals, keys, programming), and their friend Zach Wood (drums). Employing a bottom-heavy hard rock sound, their style invoked names like Shinedown, Puddle of Mudd, Staind, and Drowning Pool, though their use of the throbbing drones of the tribal didgeridoo added a signature Kiwi touch. The group relocated to North America shortly after forming, eventually ending up in Vancouver. They first gained prominence overseas in 2009 while opening for Creed on the group’s Full Circle reunion tour; they released their debut long-player The End of the Beginning the same year. In 2011 the band issued an acoustic collection of some of their more popular songs, Like a Storm Unplugged, before unleashing the Chaos Theory, Pt. 1 EP in 2014, which featured the hit single “Love the Way You Hate Me,” as well as a hard-hitting cover of Coolio’s “Gangster Paradise.” The band’s second studio long-player, Awaken the Fire, was released the following year via Century Media, followed by lengthy tours of Europe and North America. Returning in the summer of 2018, Like a Storm delivered their third album, the slightly more polished Catacombs. (Source)

Stitched Up Heart

When the initial incarnation parted ways, lead singer Alecia “Mixi” Demner created a new band. In the beginning, the band’s visual and sonic aesthetic were a little Tokio Hotel-meets-Paramore. This anime-goth-with-emo enunciation informed much of their 2012 self-released debut EP, Escape the Nightmare, which included “Dead Walkin'” and “Is This the Way to Get to Hell.” Their second EP, Skeleton Key, followed two years later and ramped up their sound with heavier riffs and shredding screams, which featured prominently on singles “Grave” and “Frankenstein.” The brutal evolution (more Evanescence-meets-In This Moment) carried into 2015 with the haunting single “Finally Free,” which unveiled a new lineup (Decker on drums, Merritt and Dorian on guitars, and Randy on bass), a more cohesive sound, and a new look for the band. Their debut album for Another Century Records, Never Alone, was released in June 2016. Featuring down tuned guitars and pummeling drums, Never Alone debuted in the Top 10 of both the Billboard Heatseeker and Hard Rock charts. (Source)
